Is It Living or Nonliving?

How are living things different from non-living things?
How do we know what is living and what's not living?
What do living things need to survive?
These are some of the questions we are trying to answer as we begin to learn all about organisms.  Today our fabulous First Grade scientists explored a woodland habitat. The children had an opportunity to meet with Mr. Prazar, our resident environmental scientist.  After reviewing some safety tips, our scientists spent some time exploring this habitat, searching for living and non-living things.  As we sorted the items in our collections, the children were encouraged to explain why they think what they found was living or non-living.  We also had a category for "unsure."  This exploration and sharing got the children to begin thinking about the characteristics of living things and what living things need to survive.

After rolling this large log, we discovered that many living things like to live under wood, bark and leaves.

We are learning about how to be safe from ticks while exploring outdoors.
I love how Akash has his pants tucked into his socks!

We found lots of great things to sort.

I wonder what Sophie found?

It looks like Jake and Jackson are deciding where they will search next.

We had an intern from Masco working with us also.
Jack was so great with the children.
After we were finished exploring, we did a tick check.  It's always important to do a tick check after exploring outdoors.  After checking ourselves, we worked with a partner, taking turns checking each other for ticks.

We are looking forward to our next outdoor adventure on Thursday, May 19th!
While we are waiting, we will be making our classroom terrarium and aquarium so we will be ready for our new organisms, which will be arriving any day now!
