Museum of Science Pictures

Here are some pictures from our field trip to
the Museum of Science.  After some technological "glitches",
I finally was able to upload the pictures onto our classroom blog.  It took lots of perseverance!
Special thanks to Susan Grant, Sara Lahaie, Cindi Donnellan and Karen Tavernese for being amazing chaperones!  The children had a fantastic time.  It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and curiosity as they explored the exhibits.

Super Scientists Blogging Observations Homework

Exploring outdoors with your child can be a great way to spend quality time together and it is lots of fun! As a special enrichment homework assignment, I am asking each child to respond to the following questions by posting a comment on our blog page.  I am encouraging the children to type their own responses, as this is a wonderful opportunity for them to gain more experience using technology, which is an important skill that they will need throughout their lives.  I am also encouraging the children to add as much detail as they would like to their response.

You can help your child by reminding them to tap out words slowly, check the spelling of common sight words, and edit their work for the correct use of capitals and punctuation marks. Comments and pictures will not show on the blog immediately, but will be posted within the next few days!

Now let's get started super scientists . . .

Take some time to explore in your yard or while on a nature walk with a parent.
Then answer the following questions by posting a comment on our blog.

1. What were three of your favorite living things that you found while exploring?

2. Where did you find each organism? (in a tree, under some leaf litter, etc.)

Bonus Question:
Choose one of the organisms you found.
Can you explain why you think it is living?

I can't wait to read your responses!
Have fun first grade bloggers!

Is It Living or Nonliving?

How are living things different from non-living things?
How do we know what is living and what's not living?
What do living things need to survive?
These are some of the questions we are trying to answer as we begin to learn all about organisms.  Today our fabulous First Grade scientists explored a woodland habitat. The children had an opportunity to meet with Mr. Prazar, our resident environmental scientist.  After reviewing some safety tips, our scientists spent some time exploring this habitat, searching for living and non-living things.  As we sorted the items in our collections, the children were encouraged to explain why they think what they found was living or non-living.  We also had a category for "unsure."  This exploration and sharing got the children to begin thinking about the characteristics of living things and what living things need to survive.

After rolling this large log, we discovered that many living things like to live under wood, bark and leaves.

We are learning about how to be safe from ticks while exploring outdoors.
I love how Akash has his pants tucked into his socks!

We found lots of great things to sort.

I wonder what Sophie found?

It looks like Jake and Jackson are deciding where they will search next.

We had an intern from Masco working with us also.
Jack was so great with the children.
After we were finished exploring, we did a tick check.  It's always important to do a tick check after exploring outdoors.  After checking ourselves, we worked with a partner, taking turns checking each other for ticks.

We are looking forward to our next outdoor adventure on Thursday, May 19th!
While we are waiting, we will be making our classroom terrarium and aquarium so we will be ready for our new organisms, which will be arriving any day now!

Animal Habitats

Today your child was treated to a program presented by the Museum of Science called Animal Habitats. The museum brought in live animals for the children to observe for clues that determine the animals' ideal shelter and food.  We observed an American Toad, a Snapping Turtle and a Prehensile Tailed Skink.  Students were then challenged to choose the suitable habitat for each animal.

Children were also given an opportunity to touch skin, bones, and feathers so they could feel some of the characteristics that help each animal survive. Ask your child about what they experienced as well as the predictions and inferences they made about the optimal habitat for the animals they saw.

Many thanks to TESPTO for funding this wonderful experience!

You can click on the link below to watch an interesting video on Animal Habitats.

You can also click on the link below to go to
National Geographic Kids, where you can find all sorts of articles and videos on animals
and their habitats!

As part of our Spring Organisms Unit we will have classes taught by Mr. Prazar. Weather permitting, those classes will be held outside near the Audubon.
On Friday, May 6th we plan on going outdoors to explore.  Please remember to dress your children appropriately for this adventure.  We recommend they wear closed-toe shoes, such as sneakers; light colored shirts with long sleeves; long pants with socks they can tuck into their pants, hats, coats and gloves.  Teachers will have students conduct a tick check after the walk, but please check your child again at home.  I'm looking forward to exploring outdoors with the children!

Thank you!

Special thanks to all of the families who helped us celebrate Teacher Appreciation Day!
This afternoon I had an amazing surprise!
Debbi Dikan and Jen Nelson watched the children while I went down to the gym for an hour.  When I arrived in the gym, I was stunned to see beautiful flowers on tables covered with white tablecloths.  There were photographers there to take silly pictures, sales reps from Lakeshore Learning handing out bags with free classroom supplies, delicious treats, coffee and refreshments, and parents who came around offering some scrumptious appetizers!  There was a hair stylist there with a hot curling iron, so I sat down and enjoyed a delicious treat while getting my hair curled. Then, the fun began!
I took my first Zumba class and danced to three songs!
After that, all of the teaching staff went into the cafeteria where we were greeted by all of the children, Mrs. Costa and the wonderful parent helpers. The children sang two songs to us,
The Fight Song and You Have Made a Difference,
and Mrs.Costa had some kind words of appreciation to the teaching staff, as this will be her last Teacher Appreciation Week with us at Steward School.
At last, my hour of "me time" was up, and I took the kids back to our classroom, where another lovely surprise was waiting for me! The children had made a beautiful flower box with
"hand made" flowers.  Each flower had a message from a child telling something they have learned from me!
Here's a picture of their present along with their thoughtful cards.  Thank you to all of the parent helpers, families, children and especially Mrs. Costa for making this a truly special day that I will always remember!
